Ok here's an idea, what if the miss fire
is from slack in the timing chain and has nothing to do with the electrical?

    That's an idea.

I'm starting to wonder if I should have just pulled the heads and changed the gaskets when I did the valve cover gaskets.

Cylinder pressure leak down test or compression
testing wouldn't be a definitive sign head
    gaskets need replacing.

Water in the oil would be a definite
    sign.

    Head gasket burn through between
    cylinders would cause misfiring consistantly.

You are getting that occasional one
enough to trip the code, an seems
like you've hit everything but the timing
    chain and valve train already.

Yea I did a compression test, came back within range. I have a small amount of smoke coming from the tail pipe, haven't noticed any loss of coolant though and the oil still looks good.

    Messing with the 96 today.

Stuck on what to do. Had it sitting in the garage, hit the pedal a few times to bring the rpms up. Looked at the rear of the truck and noticed a good amount of white smoke coming out of the pipe.

Causes of white smoke? Coolant, oil burning, what else??

White smoke would be oil burning. My guess would be your rings

trying to upload a file of it spewing smoke but I cant get the video to upload. GRRRRR

I know coolant will also cause white smoke if its leaking in due to a leaking gasket, oil is a possibility. I checked my oil level, seems to be spot on. I was thinking that maybe a leaking injector would cause smoke but I would most likely have a CEL for a rich condition, I would imagine.

    Leaky valve seals.
    Remember oil under valve cover?
Did you ream out those oil return holes at the ends of each head?

It seemed pretty dry when I pulled the covers off, completely forgot about the damn holes. I was too concerned with trying to find that EGR tube as cheap as possible.

The smoke happens once the truck is warmed up.
