Automatic Transmission Assembly Removal & Installation To Remove: 1. Place vehicle in neutral. 2. Safely raise and support the vehicle. 3. Remove or disconnect the following: Negative battery cable Transfer case (4WD Vehicles) Transmission fluid pan (if transmission is to be disassembled) A) Drain fluid and reinstall pan Driveshaft flange marks 4. Mark the driveshaft flange and rear axle pinion flange (2WD Vehicles). 5. Remove or disconnect the following: Bolts and rear driveshaft (2WD Vehicles) Fuel line bracket from extension bolt (2WD Vehicles) Shift cable bracket Flexplate inspection cover Rubber access plug Flexplate-to-torque converter nuts A) Discard the nuts Starter motor electrical connector cap A) Electrical connectors Starter motor Transmission cooler lines and position aside Bolt for the transmission filler tube on RH cylinder head A) Position tube aside Bolts for exhaust hanger RH exhaust shield bolt LH exhaust shield bolt Place and secure a transmission jack under transmission. Remove or disconnect the following: Rear crossmember bolts Rear transmission retainer nuts Crossmember Rear transmission support Transmission electrical connectors Transmission range sensor electrical connectors Output shaft speed sensor electrical connectors Solenoid body assembly electrical connector Position a drain pan; Insert plug into transmission (if fluid was not previously drained) Remove transmission-to-engine bolts; Note the lengths and locations of all bolts ***WARNING*** Secure torque converter in transmission. Injury can result if it falls out of the transmission. Special Tool installation 6. Install special tool after sliding the transmission back horizontally to provide access. 7. Lower the transmission nose-down to clear the flexplate and exhaust. 8. Disconnect vent tube (4WD Vehicles). To Install: 1. Ensure that the special tool is installed. 2. Position vent tube on top of transmission (4WD Vehicles) 3. Place and secure transmission on transmission jack. Transmission installation with the jack 4. Raise and position transmission into the vehicle allowing the shaft tail to go over the exhaust, and piloting converter housing into position by dowels in rear of the engine block. 5. Place transmission in horizontal position and remove the special tool. 6. Move the transmission toward the engine aligning the orange balancing marks between the torque converter studs and flexplate bolt holes. 7. Install or connect the following: LH Transmission retaining bolts in correct locations A) (as noted during removal) B) Torque to: 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm) RH Transmission retaining bolts in correct locations A) (as noted during removal) B) Torque to: 35 ft. lbs. (48 Nm) Solenoid body connector A) Connect harness retainer to transmission Output shaft speed sensor TR sensor connectors A) Connect harness retainer to transmission Rear transmission support A) Torque to: 59 ft. lbs. (80 Nm) Rear crossmember into place Rear transmission support nuts A) Torque to: 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm) Rear crossmember bolts A) Torque to: 66 ft. lbs. (90 nm) 8. Remove the transmission jack. 9. Install or connect the following: RH exhaust shield bolt A)Torque to: 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) LH exhaust shield bolt A)Torque to: 11 ft. lbs. (15 Nm) Bolts connecting exhaust hanger to crossmember A)Torque to: 30 ft. lbs. (40 Nm) Transmission fluid fill tube onto RH cylinder head with the bolt A)Torque to: 9 ft. lbs. (12 Nm) Transmission fluid cooler tubes A)Torque to: 15 ft. lbs. (20 Nm) Starter motor and bolts Starter motor electrical connector and ground wire Starter motor electrical connector cap Torque converter nuts; A) (Rotate the crankshaft to access all nuts) B) Torque to: 27 ft. lbs. (36 Nm) Rubber access plug Flexplate inspection cover A) Torque to: 25 ft. lbs. (34 Nm) Shift cable end and bracket Fuel line bracket (2WD Vehicles) A) Torque to: 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm) Driveshaft to transmission; A) Aligning yellow dots (2WD Vehicles) Driveshaft to rear differential; A) Aligning marks, and the bolts (2WD Vehicles) B) Torque to: 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm) Transfer case (4WD Vehicles) New inline transmission fluid filter (or kit if vehicle was not equipped) A) Unless no internal repair was performed Negative battery cable 10. Lower the vehicle. 11. Fill transmission fluid.
