    No its not mine. Lol

Guys, working on my uncles 08 SD. Just did a complete brake job on it, he spent $600 on a power-stop front and rear brake kit.

There is play in the outer tie rod on the passenger side. Now, this truck has 2 outers on this side, at least that's what I'm calling them. The knuckle has a tie rod mounted on top AND on bottom. The bottom tie rod uses the upper tie rods stud.

The question is, is the lower rod supposed to have up and down play, I'm saying no its not supposed to BUT the rod does not go through the knuckle, its secured by a nut and it should twist back and forth freely like normal through-knuckle tie rods do. It looks like it has a steel sleeve with bushings on each side that slides over the top tie rod stud and is secured with a nut on the bottom. I can move the rod up and down by hand, I also feel the rod move when I jack the driver side up and push side to side on the tie. No movement when I do the same to the passenger side.

I'm saying its bad BUT this is the first time I've come across this type of steering linkage and I want to make sure I'm right, making sure there's not supposed to be any play. The part is also pretty expensive, $160 for 1 tie rod. Trying to decide if the top needs to be replaced too.

Something not right if you can move it by hand and not move the drivers side.

Has to be a cheaper part out there but still high quality.

I looked @ Rockauto and most expensive Motorcraft tierod left outer is
    MEOE217

    Center link is
    MDOE38

Right tie rod is the one that uses the bolt thru MEOE220
    $103.99

Shame it's Prolly just the bushing worn out where the bolt for the center link goes thru?

Too bad you don't have some urethane bushings laying around that just so happen to fit that pass thru tie rod end and the metal sleeve will go thru the center hole of it.

I'm just going to replace it. it doesn't seem right but the way its made and mounted has me asking questions. like I said, it does NOT go through the knuckle itself. it mounts to the above tie rods stud that goes through the knuckle, slips over the stud and a nut is tightened on the stud, the nut secures both tie rods ends.

just figured I would post up before I went at it, easy fix, just had a question. ill know for the next time when I work on one! just crazy how its worn out with 35k miles

my uncle wants MOOG, that's why it so expensive lol
