I have an 09 explorer with the 4.6 I picked up used with 100k. I'm almost positive the dealer I bought it from used 5w30 not the recommended 5w20. (Not a ford dealer) my question is it OK to roll with that oil until its due again then switch back to motorcraft? I can tell the 4.6 tick is a little louder once its cold started. Probably from heavier oil?

The heavier oil will actually quiet the motor down. I've been running 5w-30 in my truck for a long time with no problems.

You can switch it out now or when its required with whatever synthetic oil you want.

Will is on point, using 5w30 in the wife's Mazda 3.0
in summer 5w20 in winter and Lucas Synthetic Stabilizer.
Also Lucas SS in the 7.3 for years now, Wally Mart
finally carries it @ $15.99 qt.

I know most don't believe in those oil additive
super lubes but Rev-X really quieted down the
famous valve train cackle on the PowerStroke,
thought it turned into a 6pointUhOh.

Thanks Joe I'll look into the additives.I know the 4.6 has that legendary tick so it doesn't bother me much.once the engine is warm it's almost nonexistent

legitimately the only reason they use the lighter weight oils is the slight increase in fuel mileage.
