I was thinking about since I only have 100 miles on my 2012 I would switch the oil over to full synthetic .. good or bad idea on this gang ? What are the pros and cons ?
If it were me, I'd wait till the 3K mark. After that, definitely synthetic. It's all I use in my vehicles.
Been using conventional oil (Rotella 15w40) but adding a quart of Lucas Synthetic Stabilizer ($18) and a bottle of Prolong ($20) into the HPOP. Clean dipstick after 155K miles. You can tell someone went way over on oil changes if the dipstick is blackened or they used low quality oil. IMO. I know it's about $2 - $2.75 more per quart for synthetic Rotella depending where you buy it and at almost 14 quarts to change the oil in the 7.3 PowerStroke she ain't cheap. Think the last time I used full synthetic it was $70-$75 for the filter and oil. That's a $10 filter on a 7.3. I've heard the sales story that if you run synthetic you shouldn't switch back to conventional. Some say it affects the seals and gaskets switching back to conventional from synthetic. After 155K she don't leak but a couple drops after about 5-6K on an oil and filter change seems it's coming from the turbo pedestal area.
Good info guys thanks. Is there a so called "break in oil" on new motors and if so is there a time frame. I have always used synthetic in all my trucks .. but yet again I have never owned a brand new one .. lol
There is break in oil. I see them use it on power block all the time for a few runs on the dyno. Now if Ford changes the oil before it lease the plant idk. I would just leave the oil that is in till it's time to change. Then using full syn. I like AMSoil, Synthenic Motorsports on here sells it. It's cheaper than Royal Purple and the independent research I've seen shows what they says it does... it does.
I would wait till 3000mi then change over to whatever full synthetic you like. I use Royal Purple, but it doesn't matter that much
I'm assuming you purchased it brand new? If so, Motocraft oil is all synblend now if I'm not mistaken. I'm almost 100% sure that's what's in it.
