Are timing chains supposed to have some play when new? I put vortec timing set on a 350 and it was tight. But on this 390 I got yesterday the timing chain has play in it but the timing set is new with just surface marks on the spockets.

Yes the gears are new also. I'm thinking the crank is wore down and needs replaced or a spacer.

Double check the chain with another one at the parts house to be sure it's not wrong first....

Ok, You might be right on being a wrong chain. I googled these engine numbers
    C6ME-A,7E27 and came back with a 67 mercury/ford galaxie 390 cobra jet.

Bought it for 200 bucks. The person he got it off of said it was a 390 and all it needs is a gasket set.
