I'm just gonna put it back to together. I am gonna check rod bearings first though. This looks like very clean motor. I know it wouldn't hurt to sandblast and repaint the oil pan, and engine block ford engine blue. Its starting to get surface rust on them. Might do valve covers also.

i can telll you a very easy way to test rod bearings without pulling the caps off....it will tell you if there good or bad... ...

Rotate crank intill that rod cap is easy to hit....
take a hammer.. And when the end of the handle(the butt end) knock on it...not hard...but good enough to hear it... do all the ones you can... then rotate and do the rest....and listen for the sound... they should all sound the same... if you got one or two that have a comepletly different tone... then you have a problem.......

Thanks for the tip. I'll check the camshaft also. If I have to replace the lifters I'll probably just go ahead and get a cam n lifter kit. I was told if the lifters need replaced then do both cause there's probably a chance that the cam lubes are showing wear also. I would run into problems when just replacing the lifters.

the diffs in power would be cams or carb.. or even a higher comp ratio.....the difference in prices from one to another is the cams.... the link i show you was for a car... the cars came stock with a hotter cam....if it was me i would take that link i showed you and add the 4.04 and step the cam up there....

Should go ahead and replace the cam bearings also if do have to do a cam and lifter kit? I assume yes.
