I've sprayed degreaser in my engine bay only once after a day of mudding, but when I did it I also took a rag a wiped everything down. Then just risnsed it off. That's about all the experience I have on spraying my engine.

For mud a wet rag is all I've needed. It takes longer and it is a pita, but it gets it done without worries. I have also degreased the engine but I never take a power washer anywhere near my engine. Too much of a chance of forcing water into a sensitive area.

Ill use a pressure washer from a distance to an engine while its warm
Close the hood for a bit to let it steam
Spray degreaser and scrub the stubborn areas and rinse
I try to stay away from the alternator and the airbox

My brother does it the same way, him and I did hundreds of cars while we detailed cars at my cousins dealership

With the idea of washing the
engine. Don't wash a hot engine and
don't try to make Niagara Falls in the
    engine compartment.
