i think i nailed my gear change. i towed my 72 chevy w/ a dual axle hd trailer and it was no problems! there is a formula to use to get the right gearing. you can use what other people say, or do a bit of math and get the right one for sure

(New tire size DIVIDED BY oem tire size) TIMES oem r&p= New r&p

    Ex:

    (35/30)*3.73 = 4.35

    (35/30)*3.55 = 4.14

Using a 4.10 or 4.30 will put you back inline with original truck specs, which will give you better life out of your powertrain. oversizing your gears will have the same effect as riding undersized.

where did you get a quote for 3100? was it right off of trick flows site, cuz of course its gonna be expensive. Lets break it down. right now, your 4.6 prolly makes 225hp at the wheels. and thats prolly generous. now, you would get an additional 150hp out of the kit. lets say you found it for 2500 (which is what i found them for) you would be getting 1HP for every $17 dollars you spend. you cant get that kind of performance for the nuck out of any other mod, unless you TC/SC, which you can do since you can get a SC kit for a pony and put it on your truck (just match blocks). each their own... i plan on building a balls motor thats all motor.

Yeah it was 3099 on summit. It aint bad once I startin thinkin about it last night. And plus with a sm as ll port job you could up power a little more. Only bad think with 4.30s is that 4.56s for front are cheaper. What kind of 4.30s did ya get for the front?

don't need front gears if you got no front axle. :jester: 2wd 35's FTMFW! :peace:

i personally wouldnt put 4.56 gears in a truck. thats just me though. if you cant find a reverse 4.30 (cuz thats whats gotta go in the front) you should go 4.10's. it will make the truck feel like it did when you first brought her home ridin on stock wheels/rubber. she had pep then, didnt she? 4.10's will give that same pep.

didn't know they made a reverse 4.30 but thats good to know. i was wanting to do a 4wd conversion next year but was dreading doing a double r&p swap. good to know!

so compare what a regular 4.30 and 4.56 for the rear costs. add that to their respective front r&p cost, and whats the difference between the 2? if its only $100 or so, then I would go w/ the 4.30's just for the fact that it puts you in factory specs. i have also heard of having to grind down 2-3 teeth on your ring to get the pin in, and i don't know about grinding down my gear ya know? some have, just not for me is all.
