since i have an auto and not a stick i cant have a slick custom shifter, so i've had this idea about changing my column shifter my idea is to to take a nice shiny craftsman wrench as such and somehow attach it to the selector in the column, i have never seen anything done like this and idk how it is attached, does the selector arm screw in or is is bolted in? and what material is it made of? can i cut the shift arm and weld the wrench to it?
are the column shifters metal? I think so, cause you could slice it and weld the wrench on and get a grinder with a flapper disk and blend it together
If it it looks like the pic I attached then you can take any shifter out of pretty much anything ford made from like 92 and up. Just make sure it has OD or not depending on what you have. I just did this, I Posted it in another thread but I took this out of a 94 lincoln continental and re wired my OD switch. I also got a signal lever, but I have to mod the resisters for the wipers. The column selector is coated steel. If you have overdrive there is a wire running up the selector into the switch, if not then its just steel. it has a hole in it with a metal pin and a holding spring. I just used a screw driver and tapped it a couple times and the pin just pops out. You have to remove your ignition lock cylinder and the column shroud though. To remove the lock cylinder use a punch or small screwdriver, remove the battery cables and turn your key to "on". on the bottom of the shroud there is a small hole with a spring loaded lock pin, push the screw driver in and pull the lock cylinder out in the "on" position. if you dont disconnect the battery itll ping the whole time. from there just take the 3 screws out of the column shroud and the rest is self explanatory. PM me if you need any other tips. I literally just did this yesterday
thanks, i saw ur thread about it, we tried to use a signal arm in my explorer once from a 99 f150 and it was all screwy, it fit but none of the functions worked right, idk what to do with the OD button, i thought before about getting a dud grenade and threading it on the end and using the trigger as the OD button maybe ill go to the pick and pull and get one so i dont destroy mine
good call. yeah, different trucks have different wiper resisters. they can be modded with some soldering and what not. A tester is always a good route ha ha. You could also re route the wires and just mount your OD button somewhere else. All it does is send a signal to the PCM ordering an overdrive cancellation.
