Hey guys.. Was going to pick up a CAI for my 2004XL. Been reading that it might lean the motor, might not...do I need a tuner when I get a CAI? thanks

The 5.4L engine tends to run lean on aftermarket CAIs. The smaller engines tend to adapt better to them, but if you have a 5.4L you should definitely give Troyer a call for custom tunes. He has done incredible amounts of R&D on the 04-08 aftermarket intakes. I dyno'd my truck with his tunes and the A/F ratios were dead on 100% and the truck had gained 50 rwhp on the premium tune.
if you dont want to drop the coin on a tuner and some custom tunes, you can also get a Diablo MAFia. It goes between the MAF and the factory harness. it keeps the MAF in the 3-5 volt range that it likes to see. higher or lower and you run rich or lean. its a cheaper alternative to a tuner, but you will gain more than just a fix for CAI from a tuner, keep in mind.
Oh lord here we go....been dealing with the same issue. DO NOT. I REPEAT DO NOT PUT THAT CAI WITHOUT A TUNE. You will be thrown lean codes....

Well...I'm running the 4.6L engine in mine. I'm guessing a tuner first then just to be on the safe side. Also running my Cepek's with 33's...my speedo is off. A tuner should fix that right? There is a local dealer here that sells the SCT tuner's, but his rates are pretty high... He's done all my tunes on my stang, but with the truck..might want to try elsewhere if it's cheaper. I never did install a custom tune before. When I order the tuner...do I tell them what I'm running and they can give me a custom tune based on that right? Again...never installed or ordered a tuner before online. I'll go check out the websites..
