single 2 1/4 straight pipe with 7 inch tip side dumped before the rear passenger tire, the first cat was gutted and used as a y pipe, the second cat was removed and is in my garage, and the tip was made from the stock muffler, I have a second tip in my garage for when I run true dual straights here is a vid of my exhaust https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCvxD0e1K9g&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Ok, so everyone here is going with the "loud and proud" agenda. so don't boo me off the site when I ask...What about those who want to go quiet? What exhaust setup would you suggest? I've got a carburated 460 with headers (brand unknown), and dual straight pipes running back to a pair of Thrush cherry bombs. Sounds like my old Camaro, but I'd rather run silent with this monster. However, I'd rather not take a loss of power. I was thinking of putting two mufflers back to back with the exhaust coming out behind the rear tires. And since my truck has a full four door cab, and a full length bed, i've got plenty of room. But, I'm just not sure if my idea will work, or what mufflers to use, so any advice is appreciated! Thanks!
Dana. Researching "quietest muffler" I hear the Summit Turbo mufflers http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-630125?seid=srese1&gclid=CK374ZrBq7oCFVRk7AodoiMAfg are low priced and they look like stock style mufflers do. The Borla XS mufflers are supposed to be quiet but not cheap. Stacking two mufflers on IMO would cut down on performance and I'd say also reduce fuel mileage with too much back pressure. Our 1974 F100 360 2V has Flowtech headers into 2 1/2" pipe and 2 1/2" Flowmaster duals si/so with side exits. The 2000 F250 has MBRP 4" straight pipe.
Back to back mufflers sounds like a bad idea. If you want to, I would suggest running two of the mufflers stated above in a true dual fashion so that you are still running two mufflers to deaden the sound as compared to a single muffler. A carbed 460 with headers is going to make some noise regardless though lol
Thanks for the info. I always wondered about the back pressure from the back-to-back idea. Can't have that! lol and yes, I do expect my rig to make some noise regardless, but i'd still like to be able to hear myself think hehe. Those summit mufflers look good, and the price is certainly right. I intend to keep the true dual setup, so that wont be an issue. Magnaflows are also something i'm considering. I'll either run the exhaust all the way back, or possibly run stacks up through the bed right behind the cab. But that's more about performance than asthetics, and is completely determined on just how wide the 110 gallon fuel tank is that is sitting in the front of the bed. It may not even be an option. and thanks for the welcome!
