it only wears it if you over size the turbo and push your engine past the point it can handle. i would say that w/ your 4.2 v6, you would be able to handle upwards of 7psi of boost, which doesnt sound like alot, but its about a 100hp boost. anything more than 7psi you start to strain the transmission first. they can only handle about 10lbs of psi (boost) and when you shift from one gear to another, the transmission makes that shift by using an additional 2psi, therefore the most you would want to run is 7 (+2 from shifting giving you 9psi at peak). you're engine can handle up to about 12psi, and then after that you will definitely need to upgrade the internals.

as far as what turbo, i'd have to let ya know later as my spreadsheet is at the house for determining turbo sizing to engine size.

so its like the...evo 8? it had a huge turbo and tons of power but had tons of LAG!!!!!!

it looks like the only mods you can do is port the throttle body, CAI, efans, headers and full exhaust or run em backwards and run turbos then lighten up the body, put in light weight seats, aluminum wheels disk brakes in the rear (some come with drums im sure) make it a standard transmission, gears

is it just the 5.4 that is free or everything that comes with it? I believe the trannies are different, along with the computer, front shock and springs, I think even the rear axle's are different.

IMHO it would be much easier, both on your wallet, and on your truck w/ build time, if you went a turbo route. w/ the 5.4 you will need the ECM and pray that your truck can run that ECM, or you will need an whole new wiring harness. and like Nick said, that doesnt take into account the shocks/front upgrade that is prolly needed, along w/ the 5.4 transmission. then you have the headache of trying to get rid of your current 4.2 powertrain, if you could even get rid of it. i could go on about the negatives of doing the 5.4 swap, but thats the only reason i am negative. the 5.4 is a great motor, power proven.

and if you think about it, your 4.2 v6 is a large v6. hell my v8 is a 4.6.

i'll have to check my personal spreadsheet when i get home later tonight and let ya know which one precise. i'll give you the right size for a single turbo, or a twin. i recommend TurbobyGarrett as I have personal experience w/ their turbo's/company. but for a quick reference:

    Single Turbo: GT3582R w/ an A/R of 0.63
    Twin Turbo: GT3071R w/ an A/R of 0.86

but I will have to verify those w/ my spreadsheet at home.
