Well guys I need some transfer case help. My old one wasn't working very well so I put this one (used) in towards the end of the summer hoping it would get me through the winter. Well, Apparently not. Driving down the road in 4wd (very icy today) and got this god awful grinding noise that quickly got worse and worse so I popped the truck into neutral right away and it stopped. Coasted to the side of the road and put it into 2wd and tried again...no noise, great so it's not the transmission.

    She's running fine in 2wd and I haven't tried 4wd again.

Anyway, looks like I need to rebuild a transfer case. I'm tight on cash right now so having it done by a shop probably isn't an option.

I have a feeling the old T-case is in better shape. That one would just clunk in and out of 4x4 randomly, usually under load. This newer one I have a feeling is done for inside.

So question is, I guess, anybody got ideas as to what specific part or parts inside T-case #1 would cause it so slip in/out?

Are you sure it's not just the 4x4 engagement solenoid?

Could that have caused so much noise? I could feel the truck shake when it was happening. It started as a grinding then got louder, then started clunking

Well a transfer case is uber simple, not much to go wrong in it. Typically grinding is cause by not full engagement

When you say solenoid are you talking about that little motor, or is there another one I should look out for?

I'll pop this one loose and see if it does anything. I still have the motor from the old T-case that I could throw in there too.

Motor's working correctly. Still need to pull the plug(s) and stick a magnet in there and see what comes out.

Any idea how hard it is to rebuild a T-case? I'm assuming quite difficult...
