hey guys, how much of a pain in the ass is it to remove the front drive shaft? the rear U joint has some play and it squeaks like a mother when I engage 4x4, works fine but squeaks. front joint feels solid, as I work down the shaft to the rear joint it get some wobble up and down. seems like its a pretty tight spot and removing the shaft would make it much easier to work.
just looks kinda tight to get any tools in there to get the shaft out. too wet outside to do anything today, maybe ill tackle it tomorrow. I need a new serp belt too.
It is tight. There's a heat shield you'll want to remove. That driveshaft is telescopic, so pray yours isn't froze up with rust like mine was. If it isn't, it'll be an easy job. If it is, it's a royal PITA. May want to pull the two halves apart and put some more lube in there while you've got it out. Takes some kind of dry lubricant. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
Must be, but mine didn't have a boot. I eventually said screw it and took it to the shop because I couldn't compress the shaft which meant I couldn't get it dropped out of the truck. They didn't say anything about a boot, but maybe some had them/some dont. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
Here's what mine was like... 1st pic-Heat shield I removed. At the rear end of the shaft. 2nd pic-Forward end of the shaft, real easy. Please ignore the oil leak, I'm not fixing that stupid thing. 3rd pic-Mine just has a little rubber seal on the sliding part. Also, more of that damn heat shield. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk
yea I see you don't have a boot in your third pic, I do. it almost looks like a shock boot, just smaller.
Well it looks like you should be able to just compress that and it should drop right out. In my 91 I got the same thing and all I had to do was undo some u-bolts from the front drive shaft, compress it in and it dropped right on out, but things differs in years don't know if they do that or not
