Thanks fellas.. I'll be looking into the turbo option. I think everyone's confirmed it's the smarter choice. Vano - expect to see a few pm's from my once I've had a chance to do a little research.
sweet im looking forwards to see the turbo build. i know a few guys that build trubo cars so i can also give some help if needed
So talking w/ my tuner buddy, the biggest problem since you have that much elevation change is finding someone that can give you a good tune. Tuning is really hard if you have never done it. Its far more complicated than OUR handhelds allow. So, if you arent comfortable w/ tuning, then you'll need to find someone that can. And this is for either case, the SC or the TC. You might even want to check into a turbo kit for the 5.4 mustang (same block of course though). Some of these kits have 'chips' w/ them so you're tune is there good to go w/ the rest of the kit. Just verify that the tune for the mustang 5.4 will still work on your f150 5.4 ECU. There shouldnt be an issue, but just verify that. And as always, I'm always here to help. PM is best cuz I'll get a notice to my phone, but I check the site atleast once a day (every morning even weekends) so I'm fairly available.
i would build the kit myself and then go to a good dyno so they can tune it for you i know there is 2 good ones in michigan and one of them is a big ford guy and thats mostly want he does
So.. first question guys. What will I need aside from the turbo unit. Let's say I went with the GT4088R unit or something similar. From what I can tell I'll need: * turbo * 2.5 or 3" mandrel bent piping to get from the manifolds over to the turbo and then to exhaust * intercooler - brand/size suggestions? * dyno/custom tuning Anything else I should be researching? Headers?
find a shop or a guy who is a nerd at tuning, cause you have to get everything programmed right, if its gonna be your daily driver my main concern would be getting every set corectly in your pcm-ecu rather than putting it in
you only need an intercooler if you are trying to get more than 100HP out of the system. Otherwise, its just a lot of extra piping for nothing. You will also need to make sure your tune can firm up your trans shift. Another note for the automatic transmissions: They can only handle 7-8psi. When the trans shifts between gears, it adds 2psi to throw it into the next gear. hence the kick we feel already. The trans can not take more than 10-11 MAX. So make sure you have no more than 7 going to it. You'll also need a wastegate (wg) and a blow off valve (bov). This is how you control the boost, and also allow extra to vent somewhere. Tials are the best. I recommend a 44mm WG and a 50mm BOV. You might also need to upgrade to 44lb fuel injectors over the stock 38lb. You can order piping through mandrel-bends.com 409L Tubing List Super Bld Kit 409 SS 3" = 131.56 Super Bld Kit 409 SS 2.5" = 116.84 2.5" to 3" Trans Cone = 29 Shipping = 45 Thats what I had planned for piping for my truck atleast. I feel like I am leaving something off, but we mentioned you need to get a good dyno tune. Maybe thats it. If I think of something else, I'll obviously pass it along (subscribed). Gonna send you a pm bout something too.
