how to check a catalytic converter?

what are some methods of telling when a cat or cats have gone bad. when idling my truck sounds like a diesel, is that a sign?

 

I think you can check the temp of them and depending on how hot they are will give you a idea. A muffler shop can go into detail on it.

Smell the exhaust for a rotten egg smell.
The cat will glow cherry red after you drive the truck.
It can rattle
It can cause loss of power

alright good to know. i was afraid it was one of those unsung things that can go bad and you'll never know if you're not watching out.

 

My truck makes a little rattle when laying on the gas. If mine go out im cutting em off and off to the scrapyard.

 

mine makes a little rattle, but its not a constant one. gonna be something to hunt down once it gets a little warmer.

 

park in your garage,close the garage door, start your truck and sit inside with the windows down. if you fall asleep your truck is fine but you are not.
