I just think that you are going backwards with the stang. The s10 is clean and needs nothing that I know of. The stang needs some work. I know you...

Its no different than a spray in liner and they sand and prep those....
Prep is key. Bedliner isn't going to stick for long on unsanded paint. Grab a grey scotch brite pad from a local parts store. Scuff it really well...
