What to do now

    First, I want to thank you guys for helping me along with all of the stuff that I have been working on since buying my truck. This website is the best there is for Ford truck owners.

    I have an 04 FX4, 5.4 that I bought a few months back. A week or so after I bought it I noticed an oil leak that would leave a puddle overnight, and after the truck warmed up, the smell of it burning on the exhaust was very strong inside the cab when I would stop. The truck would also cut out at normal driving speed, and it would surge when idling in gear after it warmed up. Sometimes it would stall and die when coming to a stop or turning.

    I took it to a mechanic friend of mine, and he said that it was the DS valve cover gasket leaking, and that it needed spark plugs. I changed the plugs and gasket, and the oil leak was gone and it didn't cut out while driving anymore. It didn't fix the stalling/dying problem though. It still idled rough and surged while in gear and would sometimes die. Yesterday, the engine light came on while it was stalling and I took it to Auto Zone. They scanned it and said that it needed a Camshaft sensor. I replaced it and cleared the code, but the truck still idles bad. I also think that it has started leaking some oil again. The truck will drop to 300-400 rpms while idling in gear. I don't know what to do now. I ran some Seafoam through the tank, but not the vacuum line because I was told it could break up sludge and possibly stop up the oil pump. Could it be a PCM problem? I had it unplugged for a day while changing the plugs. Any guidance here would really help. Thanks again FFS.

    Could be. I could almost swear that I smelled fuel while I was driving it today.

    Forgot to mention that I changed the fuel filter and air filter too.

    mine did close to the same thing when i changed it out for a new pump

    How hard is the fuel pump to change? Is it in the tank?

    I may change it and clean the MAF tomorrow if you guys think it will help.

    yes...its not to bad..you can drop the tank and do it or pull ur bed off...but if u drop ur tank make sure its not full so it wont be heavy...i dropped mine..they covered my bolts with bed liner so i coldnt take it off

    Did my fuel pump after labor day weekend pull off the bed its easier for sure

    thats what i heard but i didnt have the option lol and dropping the tak is easy too..jus 2 bolts
