So I have acquired an air tank from a compressor that I hope to strip, paint, and use as an aux tank for air and I would like to hook up a horn to it, not necessarily a real train horn, just a loud ass horn. My question is if I were to order/find a horn similar to this TRIPLE TRUMPET TRAIN AIR Horn DEAFENING LOUD Horns WOW - eBay (item 270306144656 end time Oct-06-11 19:11:48 PDT) how are they wired? can I wire it to a switch/button? I dont want it wired to my reg horn. Do they come with a built in solenoid that you wire to a switch? etc.... This will be my first time wiring up a compressor with a tank and everything so Im thinking a switch to the compressor with a gauge, with an aux output run somewhere for an air hose, and then the horn. any tips and help would be appreciated. ill read through yalls walk throughs as well.
First, check out hornblasters, they sell horns that are loud as shat but are not crappy like the chrome ones. 2nd you will have your tank, horns, a pressure switch that will turn the tank on and off at certain PSI levels ( mine goes on at 175 and cuts the compressors off at 200) you will have a valve, eather electric or manual. With the horns you will have I suggest electric valve. It will fully open when pushing the button and close when you release the button. Wiring whise you will have a hot wire from your battery to a pressure switch ( hornblasters is the place to get it, has built in relay), and from pressure switch it will have a hot wire to your compressor. I put a in line switch on that hot wire to be able to turn the compressor off if I choose to from in the cab. You will have a hot wire from your battery to your electric valve button, then to the valve. You will have grounds also but that should be known. You should also put in a in line fuse not far from the battery on both hot lines also. Last I suggest a guage, your tank will half to have a pop up valve so if the pressure switch ever fails and continues to fill past where it is suppost to the valve will pop up to keep the tank from building too much pressure, or burning up your compressor. If you put a in cab gauge in you will be able to monitor your pressure. Also I put a 200 PSI pressure switch on my tank, but didnt want my horns to get but 150 so I put a air regulator in between the tank and valve so it only lets 150 psi out of the tank at a time. youres was the one I was going to read ha ha, thanks for the info. You dont see any issues in using an old compressor tank do you? Ill take a gander at your build. is it cool if I PM if I have more questions when I get this project rollin?
I dont have pics, but its an emglo nail compressor but the motor for the compressor and everything went bad, so its basically 2 2.5 gallon tanks almost like the one in the pic just older
It may already have a pressure switch, need to know what it cuts off at if it does. And half to convert it to work off 12v J.Wal
