Well I have a 2001 4.2L and its having some problems... When it idles it will idle good for awhile then all of a sudden it studdorns like its trying to shut off. Then some time when i run 60-70mph for about 10mins going home when I get into my yard and stop in drive it keeps reved up like it wants to keep going. And when Im running around 50 51 52 mph and im not accelerating and just cruising along. It feels like its jerking in the rear end. But Im not sure if its the transmission or the rear end or ether one.... Sorry for the long post.. But yall have any ideas? Sent from my piece of shat.
Are you getting a CEL? Any codes stored in the ECM-ECU / PCM? The first two symptoms sound like a IAC (Idle Air Control).
You have a plug or a plug wire going bad. It could even be the coil pack. Mine acted crazy like that when I burned a wire up. Sent from my iPhone4 using Tapatalk
That or a cam position sensor. We had a company truck with a 4.2 amd thats what it was on it. But like Bama said I'd do the plugs amd wires first....
Yeah its got CEL but idk what codes its throwin yet havent checked em and the plugs and plug wires should be good they arent over 8 months old. And the shaking wont happen if the overdrive is turned off... Oh and i dont know exactly what all those abbreviations mean... Sent from my piece of shat.
Mine wouldn't do it in overdrive either. How old is the coilpack? Mine was only 3 years old when it went bad and the one I replaced it with lasted less then a year. Something worth checking, your symptoms are almost identical to what mine was doing. Sent from my iPhone4 using Tapatalk
Thanks Bama ill try to get the codes and the coils checked today or tomorrow. Sent from my piece of shat.
Getting those codes will help you a TON! I bought a code reader back when mine was screwing up cause I got tired of AutoZone having to tell me. It's saved me a lot of headaches from having it. Be sure to post your codes, we should be able to steer you in the right direction. My 4.2 has been solid and reliable for the most part. I went through a phase where my EGR valve and EGR sensor went bad, my plug wires went bad and the damn coilpack went bad all within a 9 month period. Since then it's been smooth sailing for the past 4 years (knock on wood). Sent from my iPhone4 using Tapatalk
Yea ill be sure to get the codes tomorrow. And i just realized one of the damn spark plugs are loose and that cant be helpin by no means... ima tighten it up after she cools down.. Sent from my piece of shat.
