Yesterday I took the F250 to Ringgold to run an errand and came back home, as soon as I pulled into the drive way the engine shut off and came right back on and it did it again a second later. I pulled into my parking spot and it started running rough then smoothed out, about three seconds later it shut off and would not start back up. I let it sit about 15 minutes and it started back up again then shut off about 20 seconds later and wouldn't start again. About an hour later I went out and tried it again, it took a long crank to get it running but it ran about three minutes smoothly then shut off again and would not restart. No CEL and I tried to read the codes but none were read by my scanner. It had done this about 7 years ago and it was the CMP (camshaft position sensor) it was still under warranty then and was repaired by the Ford dealer. I searched online last night and this morning about the CMP info from several websites, experiences from other 7.3 PowerStroke owners. There are three different CMP models and read what people had found out on their own testing using AutoEnginuity's® Scan Tool software. Think I'm going to invest in this software. I went and bought one from Advance Auto $24.19 + tax, it was the gray housing with black o-ring CSS1603 from BWD (Borg Warner Domestic) this part is similar to the original Motorcraft F7TZ-12K073-A. F7TZ-12K073-B is a black housing black o-ring and F7TZ-12K073-C is a bluish-black housing with a purple o-ring. I noticed the new one has a larger surface area where the magnetic sensor is. Changed it @ 11:30am this morning using a 10mm wrench to loosen it and then a 10mm 1/4" drive socket 3" extension and ratchet. I put some dielectric grease into the connection lubed the o-ring and reinstalled the CMP. If you are looking straight at the crankshaft pulley from the front of the engine the CMP is at about the 10 o'clock position. Then truck has been running 50 minutes so far and has not shut off. I'm going to let it run for an hour and shut it down, hopefully this has solved the shutting off problem. Talk about good luck that it "broke down" in our own driveway.
I read the title and the first thing I thought was cmp. My dads did it while we were about 45 mins from the yard. Managed to limp it home, it shut off every 15 mins, but we managed to get it home. I have yet to take mine in for the recall... Been driving it since 06 and put 35k on it without an issue... I hope I stay lucky ha ha I'll get it in one day. Sent from my iThingy using Tapatalk
