I see HIDs all the time now, used to be against them because they would blind me, but with so many around here I thought it'd be better to join them instead of try and beat them. -Are they any more illegal than any of my other aftermarket parts? -Do states have differing laws about use? -Have you had any trouble with the smokeys, the 5-O, the po po (otherwise known as your local law enforcement)? -I do not want projector housings, in a regular one does the beam scatter like crazy? I especially want to blind other drivers as little as possible. I helped my friend install some on his Legacy, he hasn't had any trouble (but I feel like we're in different categories: his lights are low to the ground with factory projectors).
i don't know about the legalities. i just ordered them for my headlights and fog lights. i have after market headlights but not projectors. my neighbor has hids in his truck and has never had any problems from the police as long as you aim them correctly, you shouldn't have too bad of a problem blinding people. hids are bright though so it is somewhat unavoidable. if you want to, you can go with 35w for the headlights which are brighter than stock but not as bright as the 55w
Thanks, I'm planning on ordering some fairly soon and deal with any potential consequences later. Post some photos when you get yours installed!
i would look up the laws on it just to be sure so you know the law. I got a ticket a few months back for my lights behind the grill and bull bar lights. i aimed the lights and had someone drive towards me to make sure they werent going to blind anyone. got slapped with a $150 ticket for having to many lights on at one time(factory heads, fogs, grill and bullbar lights). The law is no more than 2 sets of lights (a total of 4 lights on at all times). I see so many people with running two behind the grill with factory heads and fogs on every night. In fact there was this one truck down the street from me with grill lights and ran them just like i did, he now has a friend with an '05 F150 with factory fogs and headlights converted to HID (which i think are far more distracting) and grill lights. see him driving every night. guess i was just unlucky. all im saying is check your state laws so you know. i thought i heard something about HIDs not being completely legal. ill see if i can find it, i could be wrong.
I could understand them being illegal if your running pink, purple or a dark blue. If you stay within 4500-8k, you shouldnt have a problem. Make sure you aim them correctly. I have never been flashed for mine except on my bike. I cant aim my bike any lower.
All aftermarket hid kits are for off-road use only. If you stick with 8000k or less you should be fine, just reaim them. I got pulled over for speeding 2 days ago at night and he didn't say anything about my lights.6000k btw
any HID kit installed in a headlight not designed for them is technically illegal. now will you get pulled over for it? not really problems are glare. the stock bulbs are shorter that the hid bulbs thus the bowl of the headlight isnt designed to shine the hid bulb without causing glare to other drivers. my suggestion is do them right and safe by doing a projector retrofit. it may be more expensive but itll look better, be safe to all and give you better light output
I haven't had problems with the length or whatever, I think the bigger problem is that they are at a brighter Kelvin output. 5000k HIDs dont' give hardly any glare, while those above 8000k are obnoxious. A projector retrofit is waaay more expensive than just buying a HID kit.
