Well, all the trucks in our driveway had/have one. And a coworker is looking into buying a '12 f150 sometime in the next few months. And hes done all his research and bla bla. Now here's whats interesting. We were talkin on break, and apparently his buddy (who drives a Cummins) told him that tonnaeu covers will reduce his mpg. As the air hitting the inside of the bed/tailgate is pushed back against the cab, thus helping to push him along. And the guy claims to have tested this. But we know how hard it is to replicate driving conditions. I can see his point to be slightly valid, until you realize the force against the cab is cancelled out by the force hitting the tailgate(imo). Thus getting you back to square one. Opinions? I'm in for a good laugh today.

The only test I've seen is tailgate down and tailgate off. Never heard of one with tonnaeu. Interested to hear more from others since I have one

I do know mythbusters did a test of tailgate down, off, and up, and up did the best. They built a model to find out why and as the air hits the tailgate it circles back around and basically cycles around inside your bed. This allows a lot of air to simply flow over this bubble, effectively making the truck more streamlined and reducing drag. With the tailgate down or off the air doesn't cycle, so it all just presses down on the bed. Im not sure about the tonnaue though. I could see it causing drag but I could also see it acting as that "air bubble"as well

From what research I've done, a cover doesn't affect mpg one way or the other. They are good for keeping water and debris out or locking your bed but not much other than that.

Being able to pitch stuff in the bed and lock it up would be huge for me, I just don't want to have to wrestle the thing off and on around hunting seasons when I regularly have large loads back there.

The tri-fold ones are real fast and easy to remove from what i've read. I just cant see spending that kind of money. My roll up soft tonnaeu has always been easy to get out of the way when needed.
