So just bought a 05 explorer, auto, 4.6, 4x4. It didnt go into reverse the other day and I gave ir gas and it finally did. Today it did it again and I gave a lil gas and it clunked into gear. Ive read but am getting mixed responses on if its valve body or internal. Went into drive fine but ever since we bought it its shifted a lil hard on 2-3. Thoughts? Its going back to dealer tomorrow to get looked at but I want to be able to tell them what I think. Thanks

Is Jasper the way to go with these? Is this the only weak link on these SUVs?

Anything with a good warranty for just in case is what I would go with. Here most Coleman Taylor gives a 3 yr warranty

Should have went with 06 and up :alone:

Anyway.... For the reverse/forward engagement issue the solenoid body is the problem, the pressure control solenoid sticks and causes the pressure to spike when shifting causing the harsh engagement. For the upshift concern unfortunately this is a major problem that will require internal transmission repair or transmission replacement. The servo bores in the transmission case wear and cause the servos to hang in the bores. Eventually the front servo piston will break causing the transmission to neutral out briefly at the 1/2 shift and then bang into third.

Yea they said it was a solenoid valve body. So that sounds about right. Am I going to be putting a tranny in this though later? This was a 1 owner and very clean, Carfax perfect.
