Anyone been inside one of these. I have a loud howling coming from mine. I've read its probably the Number 9 torrington bearing. Still shifts like new.

Truck has 78k miles. For the passed 3 months its been hooked to a ski/bass boat. Its never made a noise. Headed to the river last weekend it started howing. Fluid still smells and looks perfect.. I serviced it at 60k New fluid and filter.

All u joints and Carrier bearing look fine.

I yanked the drive shaft yesterday and noticed the output shaft on the trans is super loose, I'm not positive if its supposed to be or not.

    Truck is a 08 f150 4.2 2wd

Wish I could help... when mine failed I towed it to Ford and let them deal with it.

They should be pretty simple though. Just a regular 4-speed auto

I rebuilt the rear end at about 55k miles... Changed the fluid again about 75k miles... Truck now has 78k on it.

I lifted the truck off the ground and put it in gear while running and crawled underneath it and its def coming from the tail housing area of the trans.

I think i'm just going to change fluid and filter and add some kind of additive and just keep the radio turned up intill it explodes.

Hopefully it will make it to tax time and i'll just have a decent trans built. If it don't make it i'll probably just throw a used trans in it. And start reading up about rebuilding my own.

You can find a used unit for around $1000 pretty easily. Being 2wd makes it a lot easier to replace also. There's a lot of junk in the way on a 4wd :jester:

Run this sucker into the ground and then you have one you can work on for free

Great, I basically only use the truck to tow my boat to the river 3 or 4 times a week.

That was the first time it was unhooked from my boat for about 3 or 4 months lol.

Hahaha, I wish i could get to work by boat. Nah, i drive my old f150 (02 F150 flareside) Its basically my dads now. Or i drive my moms Caddy. Usuaully drive the caddy I can hypermile it and get like 32mpg all day lol.... Plus her 05 caddy starts using oil if it don't get drove alot. Battery was dieing lol... ITs only got 60k miles. Figured i'd start driving it instead of it sitting around.
