So my new to me 99 SD V10 developed a cold start valve tick after changing the oil which was 10w30 standard Kendall motor oil from the dealership I bought it from.
Truck has 191k miles and is very clean and great runner.
I changed it to Mobil 1 synthetic 5w30 with Mobil 1 filter and the cold start tick was yowzers.
Would go away after about 5 minutes or so.
Pulled that stuff outa there thinking the 5 weight was to light and put in 10w30 mobil 1 syn.
Better but cold start still has a slight valve tick but less and for less length of time.
Im thinking the detergents in the Oil have cleaned up the valves and passages and thats why it now has a cold start valve tick.
I bet if I switched back to dino oil it would not tick.

    Thoughts ?

I really like using synthetics in all my vehicles .

Sounds like one of the hydraulic lifters has gone dry.

Had a similar issue with my '74 F100 FE360 2V years ago after a recent
oil/filter change. It happened while at a 1998 Nascar race in Atlanta
where I had pulled our Holiday Vacationer camper.

A man camped next to me heard it ticking on start up
also and told me of a quick remedy.
He told me to pull the valve cover and pour a small amount
of Mercon Dexron trans fluid into the lifter next to the push rod.
I did and immediately it stopped ticking and I've never had
an issue with that lifter since.

Negative, ghost rider, those Mobil 1 filters are excellent. All I use now. My wife's car & my truck go 15K miles between oil changes using the Mobil Extended and the Premium Mobil filter. Not knocking Motorcraft filters, I used em for years and they were great. Just not as good as the Mobil 1.

For the record, the Bosch filters are great too. I just don't use Bosch on my truck,

Yeah, Fram shouldn't be allowed to sell oil filters. They're worthless. You're better off using a cardboard box. :jester:

I might just go back to using dino oil in the V10 as I didnt have any valve tick before I switched to a syn . Ive seen that happen more than a few times in thw VW's I service at my shop.
A heavier grade oil seems to quiet them down .

It may quiet it down some but thicker oil won't solve the underlying issue, we did the same thing to a little car my sister drove just to hide the ticking from the dealer we traded it in too that worked but i guarantee you there was some issues with the engine that we didn't feel like fixing. Im not a hundred percent sure but i know my wifes 4.0L exploder had a ticking sound, it ended up being the intake gaskets they told me one side was all i needed to fix but im no noob i replaced both since i was already in there. I would also check spark plugs unlikely that its the issue but my wifes exploder did have a spark plug come loose and yes the engine ran that way for a few days needless to say i had to retap the hole and drill it out fun fun heli coil it and replace all my plugs and wires fun fun fun good luck with the truck though haven't done much other than oil changes on the V10's

Im sure its oil related .
Truck does have 191k miles and was not there before changing over to full syn. Im aware of the aluminum heads and intake / exhaust leak tick . This is not that but just a noisy lifter struggling to be lubricated upon start up.
    Thx
