OK. so I was sitting in traffic tonight on the interstate and my engine started to make a awful sounding noise. I cut across 5 lanes of traffic to get to a median and found that one of my spark plugs had shot out also busting my coil. I've never heard of this before until I started doing research after it happened and found that it happens to these trucks often apparently. What do I do???? Any experience with this problem??? I found something at Autozone thats called a "Plug Repair Kit"....seems to sound like what I need. But I read in all those posts on Google people were having to go in a have a sleeve put in and have it rethreaded and a new plug put in after that. Any help would be great. Thanks Guys!!!

In don't think I've ever heard it being a common thing on your gen, just the 04 + doesn't mean it can't happen though. I'm honestly not sure which route to go though, someone will chime in whose had experience with it. So with that being said maybe they can answer this: would a heli coil help on this situation? Maybe that could help as another option.

I've heard of the helicoil...how exactly does that work. I know they are cheap...is that something I can do or do I have to get a shop to do that?

I think the helicoil itself is cheap, but the tool ive heard is not. My dad had a shop put a helicoil in when his starter ripped the bolt out of the housing. but im not sure if its good for this.

EDIT: I just google searched it, I read a thread on f150online a couple people said helicoils are junk for the f150, and timesert is a better option.

    common problem

the spark plugs aren't torqued enough. before you try putting in a heli coil try threading the spark plug in.

the torque rating is set too low from the manufacturer. they plugs work their way out over time.

I had two blow on me. the first one I put a heli coil in and haven't had any trouble since. when the second one blew I noticed just the very end of the plug thread was a little messed up. got a new plug and coil and threaded it in. no problems.

if you do end up needing to tap the head go with timesert. that's what everyone else recommends, though I have had no problems with my heli coil...now its going to blow out.

replace plug and coil on cold engine. torque all plugs to 20-25 lbs/ft not the 10 lbs/ft recommended.

EDIT: you will need a tap set to tap the head. I was able to rent mine. the kit I used costs aout $400.

either that or go through and torque em down.

Its been about 5 years since they have been changed. Been running fine up until tonight. I will go through and retorque them all when I fix this one cylinder. This evening was such a *****..I was on my way to get my new wheels for my truck and this crap happens.
