Hey guys, haven't posted in a little while. But the truck is givin me some trouble and I need help figurin it out. For about a week or 2 the truck has been makin a metallic whine from the engine when accelerated. I don't think it's the PS pump as its not makin any extra noise as you turn the wheel even all the way, and the alternator is charging the battery just fine. Any ideas??

check your water pump pulley for play, and your fan. Get a buddy to help you too, put it park and rev the engine and see if he can pinpoint the sound better.

Vano, it does it any time the truck is revved: park, neutral or drive.

Cowboy, we've tried narrowing it down. Best we can figure is either a bad vacuum seal or somethin belt driven. Hopin y'all might could help narrow it down from past experiences

I don't think it would be a vacuum seal. If it was that you could hear it sucking air like a supercharger.

I would still check for play, even check that tentioner pulley.

The only whine I ever got out of my truck like that is the alternator on a very cold day at startup.

I would check your belt for wear just incase.

yea, tensioner or belt for wear. my tensioner is about to go out... it doesnt whine, but i do notice if i smash the gas, there is a delay before my speed actually matches up to the higher revving. not sure if you have a similar case but that would pin point it to the tensioner atleast.

Check everythig on the front of the motor especialy the ac pump and the alternator . Basically anything hanging off the front of the engine has bearings an can go bad. I know alternators and ac pumps will straight up squeal when the bearings go out

Mine did that for about 2 weeks before the tensioner pully let go and threw the belt.

With the motor running, carefully spray some WD_40 (with the little straw) at each pulley. If it quiets down, then you have a bearing going out.

We can narrower it down if it's on the passenger or drivers side also

Was able to narrow it down to drivers side. No extra noise when turning so that makes me think its not the PS pump, other than that I have no idea...

Well got the truck fixed yesterday. Had a bad experience with a local shop tryin to sell me a $500 alternator I didn't need. Problem was a bad idler pulley. Got it all fixed and she's back to her nice 5.4 diesel tick lol
