oh god.... i forgot about spark plugs maintenance > mods. working 6 nights a week it'd be hard to find time to do it. my biggest fear is breaking them and not being able to get them out even with the tool. sparkplugaphobia
What was the one comment I heard about those plugs? They said they hit the plugs with an impact to loosen them and never had one come apart. If your luck is about like mine, I would have 8 stripped plugs.
I'm probably going to do the impact method. And yes the luck is terrible with me. I could be replacing a shock and somehow end up with a blown transmission, I also have a noise to figure out. It's a very soft creaking coming from the front end. Passenger side mostly. Only when rolling over bumps. I'm thinking lower balljoints?
Don't use the impact. The most successful method I've heard of is running techron or some tank cleaner for 2-3 tanks of gas. Soaking all the plugs with PB Blaster over night, cracking each one a 1/4 turn and soaking some more. Then slowly start working them out. Like 1 turn out, 1/2 turn in. If it starts squeaking, spray some PB Blaster and work on the others before going back to it. Have the Lisle tool sitting next to you as well. Some are always for sale on f150online.
I did a lengthy write up on my experience back at the old forum I used to belong to. Anyhow, I soaked mine with PB Blaster overnight, used fuel system treatment and the whole works. 7 out of the 8 broke, and the 8th was stripped. Some people recommend using an impact wrench, some swear to avoid it. I used it, and I would use it again if I had to. Don't even think of attempting to do the spark plug replacement without the Lisle tool. One thing about the Lisle tool is that if you have an impact wrench, it'll allow you to grab onto the broken spark plug far better than if you used a hand ratchet. Even with all the issues I had, it took me about 3-4 hours to do and that saved me around $1,000. The local dealer quoted me a maximum of $1,200 if they all break. $200 for the SP515 plugs and the Lisle tool, a sunny afternoon and I saved more in 3-4 hours than what I earn in a week.
My dealer said he could do it for $400 and guaranteed they wouldn't charge for any broken ones. I was going to get it in writing beforehand lol sent from my igloo
