I have a couple jeep buddies who are running 37s on 17s, one guy wants to go up to 40s...so...sky is the limit

The diameter doesnt matter... main concern is how wide your 17s are

thats not as big of a concern as you may think. I am running my 35s on my 7.5" wheel, one of my jeep buddies was running a 37 on a 7" wheel with no issues

The widest I've seen is 12.5 on a 7.5" Rim. Any bigger and you can start having issues. Height is limited by how much clearance and flex you have.

You can easily fit 285/70R17s on most stock Fords. 295s if you want 33s

You really need to give us more info. How big of a tire can I put on a 17" wheel?, is a lot like saying what color can I paint my car. What Type of vehicle is it? Does it have a stock suspension? Do you plan on lifting it to allow you to get larger tires? How Wide is the Wheel? Is it a street queen, or do you plan to Wheel in it? How much flex Does it have? All important factors.

I would say it is a concern
    That's why there's a recomended range
I ran a 12.5" wide tire on a 7.5" wide wheel too, I had to go to three shops before I found one that would be mounted

As far as I know it's only a Chevy wheel problem, they are 6" wide but the wheel lip weakens and eventually fails with anything bigger then a 285

My bad guys. It's an 2001 expedition stock on stock xlt rims. Only plan to lift 3-5 inches down the road.
