So a few times my truck has been very hard to start when cold. It acts like the batteries are almost dead. This is even with it plugged in. And it's not that cold out. Around 40. Doesn't do it every time either. When it's warm it's fires up just fine. Every thing I can find says FICM but that was replaced last year. The batteries and starter are 2 years old. I've got 120,000 miles on it and because of it starting fine most of the time I'm leaning away from thinking it's injectors or glow plugs. Going to get batteries load tested tomorrow. Anybody got any ideas of anything else it could be. :banghead:

Mine gets hard to start in winter when I'm running thicker oil. I'm running fords recommended 15w... Whatever... and it'll lope on the first startup because the hpop doesn't like the thick cold oil. I don't know enough about the 6.0 to know if that's an issue. I've also heard of injector o rings leaking when it's cold and gelling up on the sticks causing a hard start, but it takes some freezing temps for that.

It def sounds like your issue is electrical though. Something doesn't want to give those batteries a full charge, or keep them charged. Have your alternator tested too, my dad's has done that before, starts hard in the am but started fine the rest of the day turns out his alternator was bad.

I'll defiantly check the alternator too depending on what the test on the batteries comes back with. Don't want to pull it if I don't have to. It's got one of the worst belt tensioner locations.

When I tested mine they just ran an alternator test on it with the battery tester. That was at the auto zone.

Good call! On the ol 7.3 they like to rattle their way out of the bell housing too. Stranded my dad and me in his 02, stripped the threads right out ha ha. I held it on with a pipe wrench and puckered up while he cranked it over, got it started and got it to a shop for some heli coils. That was fun.

Well lucked up and it was just the batteries. And had a lifetime warranty on them so almost $300 worth of batteries for free. But while changing them noticed that one of the intercooler pipes had a small crack so replacing that is next on the list. It's always got to be something.
