So I've been reading up on these brakes and I guess the 99-04 SDs have somewhat of an underpowered braking system, at least for the fronts. It's common and very easy to overheat the fronts and warp them. This was later remedied for the 05+ SD. I just replaced my front rotors 6 months ago and they are already warping. Could be the quality in rotor, could be the fact that i had 1 piston in each rear brake caliper seize up causing the fronts to heat up more. I think I caught the seized calipers soon enough to not cause any serious problems since I noticed the shaking the day before I pulled them off but I've been feeling a little warping in the fronts for about a month now. Keep in mind I also just did the rear rotors and pads in August and at that point everything was fine. Regardless of what's causing the warping this time around over heating the front brakes has been a constant problem for my dad and I on both of our trucks, him having an 02 mine being an 01. It has me thinking and reading up on front brake upgrades. I've read on a few forums about upgrading to 05 front rotors and calipers but haven't been able to find out if anyone has done it, or if it's actually possible. I can't seem to find a complete thread, only snippets. Does anyone on here who is significantly smarter than I am have any thoughts? From what I've read, the rotors, calipers, and brackets will bolt up considering the axle is the same, from what I believe at least. The issues are wheel fitment, I would need 18s to run the bigger rotors. What I'm unsure of is the fitment of the depth of the rotor, does it sit in farther? Do the brackets sit in farther? Do I need to account for certain wheel backspacing? I'm sure with a little more patience I will be able to find more info but maybe someone here has some knowledge to share before I bury myself in a sea of forum searches ha ha. Thanks in advance! But then I wouldn't have an excuse to get 18 inch rims ha ha. I guess caliper upgrades would be an option too. by the time I factor in wheels and tires the cost is probably close to the same. I was just reading that the brake caliper diameter on an 05 is 13.66" vs 13.03" on the 01. Can that little but make that much of a difference? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I meant more along the lines of the heat, does a half an inch of extra material make that much of a difference as far as heat distribution? What would the benefits of 4 pistons per caliper be if the rotor is the same size? Stopping distance and power doesn't seem to be the problem just that damn heat. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
