Presently have a working switch without the 4H light working. Having thoughts on using an 09 F150 5.4 3 position switch. 4 pins instead of 8, but thinking the extra 4 needed for lights. Old beater whose prom days are over. Not doable?
Do the plugs match up? If it fits and it works, meh the lights. Otherwise you may have to get the correct switch.
No, they don't match up. the '09 has 4 pins and the existing has 8. I'm not worried about matching up the plugs, I'm trying to use a rotary switch instead of a pushbutton that has lights that can burn out. I can work around the plugs.
@Reebers77j Yahoo ! Someone who doesn't need matching plugs ! Pull up a diagram of the switch, Just ciphering out the contacts with wire colors or even by an ohm meter and happy soldering ! Save the plug in and lead wires off the to be used switch, the hate to say cut off the factory plug from your truck. With the 2 diagrams you should be able to match all of the switch ends, ie; 2L - 4L - 4H. As you say the lights don't matter but you could also take the time to match the lights up. If you don't have the pug and lead wires for the new switch, this is going to be a little more difficult, but doable.
By 2 diagrams, I mean one from the new switch to be used and a diagram for your current truck's 4x4 switch.
I used to install remote starts and car alarms back in the day for a chassis upfitter and then Best Buy. Sounds like a good 1/2 day project after getting the diagrams and solder station plus heat shrink.
@Reebers77j I see the 2009 had a push pull design for engagement disengagement of the 4x4. this may present a problem for your system.
@Reebers77j After all is said and done for figuring out the difficulty in pinouts and wire colors, spending time on this project and headache, finding another 4x4 switch for your 1996 may be the best solution ?
