So I have been saddled with pulling a blown 360 motor and transmission out of a dodge 1500 and replacing it with another one. I'm a ford guy, I don't know enough about dodge to know their motors. I have a ford 390 and transmission on hand from another project, does anyone know if I can put it in the dodge with minimal issues, or am I asking for massive headaches?

    @Wulf

Didn't gather what year Dodge 1500.
    Mid 1990's ?

    Questions to answer:

    Motor mounts - fabrication
    Transmission mount - fabrication
Driveshaft length - balance essential here
Driveshaft yoke diff or trans tailshaft difference
    Pinion angle of driveline
    Radiator hose size difference
Close fuel return line on fuel tank if injected previously
    Shifting of transmission

Were it me, I'd go back with a good used Mopar.

    Details, it it a 2000.

Ya, I think you are right, that's quite a bit of fabrication.

Good guess, it's a 2001. That is a lot more than I want to get into, any suggestions for where I can get a good rebuilt motor, and are there things I should be watching for?

    Where is Pnw ?
This will help give a location closer for a suggestion.
There are several internet salvage yards that can give warranties
rather than a you pick and pull it yards that could save on shipping.

There with the you pick and pull, the quality of the engine you get is
solely upon you, mileage, wear on the engine, did it get serviced regularly,
what all accessories does it come with, did it sit without antifreeze for any
length of time, what does the engine oil look like on the dip stick/any water
in it/milky color? and other things should be considered.

The price you pay depends on what you want. The cheaper the price, the less
likely it will come with a warranty or any warranty at all.
There are plenty of hacks who would take advantage of someone who doesn't
know what to look for in a used engine.

Is there fresh antifreeze in an out of the vehicle engine? Suspect.
Fresh paint on an out of the vehicle engine? Suspect.
Fresh oil in an out of the vehicle engine? Suspect.
Did they say it ran before it was pulled? Suspect.
Are there missing parts from various places all over the engine? Suspect.

Most honest engine sellers will offer to show you it runs before sale.
Cost savings if you pull the engine.
A missing starter or just the carb, fuel injection isn't to bad.
Look for cracks along the block exterior and freeze plugs intact and not pushed out.

Sometimes a running beater is a good option, bad body but good running motor
for cheap. Never hurts to start looking internet adds, craigslist, facebook marketplace,
letgo are some sources for used Dodge 1500s or 360 motors.

What caused the current engine to stop running?

It blew the head gasket in a bad way.

I would love to rebuild it myself but I don't have the time or space to do it. So I'm looking at long blocks, and transmissions, since we are going in that deep anyway.

I would like to go with a 360 magnum bolted up to a 47 transmission. But I've run into two issues, I'm having trouble finding out if they are bolt up compatible. I don't want to deal with adaptor plates just to make them bolt up. And the other issue is none of the transmission shops that I've talked to will sell me one without a vin that says that my truck has a 47 transmission and magnum 360 in it. I understand their thinking about it, they don't want to get stuck in a finger pointing match over who's part doesn't match the other one, so I get it, but it does make it interesting.

i have the 5.2 like i said ... and i also have a new trans here as well. had it built for my truck and hit a deer taking it to the shop to put it in. .. so its never been in a truck.
all HD guts ... will take 600 hp without breaking a sweat. but id like to see how ya put a FE under the dash of a ram ... it would have the cool factor going for it .... but im guessing with it being a much bigger mill major firewall and maby frame work will kill the project.
