Please explain why Explorer has AWD and 4wd buttons

    Yes you read it right.My girlfriend's explorer is a limited with the 4.0. I am trying to figure out why would a Ford Explorer have AWD and 4wd buttons.Anybody that can shed light on this?

    my guess would be that the 4wd would give you more torque in a necessary terrain. where as the awd is meant for the pavement only

    This. They're completely different things (awd v 4wd)

    I think awd is like auto 4wd also, where it senses which wheels are slipping. Then 4wd is like ours and sends equal power to all of them.

    Ya i wondered if the AWD is for pavement only.Then maybe it turns off when switched into 4wd for the snow,or any conditions where 4wd is needed.Just confusing when i tried to research it and really couldn't find any definite answers

    Oh i agree it is.Just never you could turn off the AWD in a vehicle.I thot having AWD ina vehicle is suposed to defeat the purpose of 4wd cause AWD does the same thing as 4wd,no?

    That's the main reason that I bought one for the wife. That thing is not even any fun in the snow.
