I gotta 2001 Regular Cab LWB 4x4 with the M5OD tranny with 111,000 miles and the good ol' 4.2. When it gets up to running temp it grinds into 3rd gear. I'm guessing 2nd to 3rd gear synchro is bad?? Am right to be assuming this?? If so, what goes along with replacing synchros? Is it a back yard mechanic job or a trained professional job? Would I be better off to just have the tranny fully re built? Sorry for all the questions, its just really getting to me. Thanks in advance guys!
Have you checked the fluid? I'd go ask a mechanic you trust what he thinks the problem is first, then have them test drive it. Unless you got the money right now for a full rebuild lol
I checked the fluid 2 weeks ago and it was clean but i decided to change it anyway, so in other words, it has clean fluid in it.
Sounds like it needs some shop time. Have you towed heavy with it or off-roaded a lot? Those sticks are pretty stout and I know its not power issues with that 4.2
Before I started driving it (started around 106,000 miles) my dad drove it as a work truck. He towed multiple scissor lifts quite a bit with it and that DEFINITELY exceeded the towing capacity of the truck as its worn through 3 clutches now.. or maybe its 4? Hell I can't remember haha. Regardless, its been through some hell.
haha gotcha. We've definitely burnt some clutchs in our 08 4.2, but nothing too bad yet. have you looked into built transmissions for these trucks? idk what they offer for manuals..
