    Hey yall

So yoday out playing in the snow my 4wd was being grumpy. If i just shifted on the fly it wouldnt kick in. If i stopped and put in nuetral it would. 4wd low works fine and high works if i stop and put in neutral. Wont kick in with any other gear. Supposed to be shift on the fly. Not had any problems before with it. Also wont kick out of 4wd unless i do the same thing as i do to put it in.

    Thoughts?

    Vacumm leak?

I don't think it's a leak. Probably be the same if you were stopped. The fact the it only works when you are stopped and in neutral for 4lo makes me think a sensor has gone bad.

This is sort of a random thought. I don't know a ton about the transfer cases but I've had my fair share of 4wd issues (I'm on my second complete case, have had a vacuum line break, and one or two failed shift motors)

Is it at all possible that the motor is getting weak or stuck and can only function if nothing is spinning in there? This probably isn't right, but I'm just thinking out loud.

The shift fork is notorious for failure as well, maybe yours is getting worn out? That said, the one in my old case looked brand new still at 165k.

I just can't think of what sort of sensor could be causing it to not engage if you're moving.

I'm betting on something electrical. When I'm stumped, it's always electrical... Ha ha I've never worked on any 4wd systems before so I'm not much help I traded mine in before I fixed it. My first assumption is shift motor or vacuum lines, but since its engaging in neutral that throws a curve ball in there ha ha. Hope you get it figger'd out.

    Well the problem was?????

I have no idea. Checked everything over and nothing. It was working properly from the get go so we made sure everything was tight and lines were good. Only thing i can think of was wires to sensor were loose. It was the only thing with play in it.

While i was there i replaced the thermostat and sway bar links. One was rusted out and had popped loose so over all a productive afternoon.

Man that's odd. Gotta love electrical gremlins. Hopefully the problem stays gone.
