Alright guys, I really gotta get this 4 wheel drive thing sorted out so I can be free to spend money on other parts of the truck...(like leather seats)...

For quite some time now I have been getting a really loud clunk that shakes the truck. It only happens in 4 wheels drive. It does it often but not too consistently, as in doesn't seem to be at any specific time. It did it pretty regularly leaving stop signs during the winter. It did it putting the jetski in the lake a couple days ago. It did it when I was in soft sand on the beach a couple weeks ago.

Ive been messing with it today and can get it to do it pretty easily on pavement, more specifically when in reverse while turning. Usually once reverse does it, I can put in in forwards and it will do it.

It doesn't only happen while turning though, does it in a straight line as well. But it's easier to make it happen while turning. Doesn't matter which way I turn either.

It does NOT do it when just driving down the highway.

    Things I've checked/looked at--

Inspected CV joints. All the boots are good, and none of the joints seem to have any play. Not necessarily saying they are definitely okay, but they appear to be and the truck seems to be jolted far too bad for it to be just a CV joint.

Theres about a half inch of rotational play in the front driveshaft. U-joints are good on both ends of the front driveshaft. The rear joint was just replaced a few weeks ago.

Checked the plug for the electronic motor thing that puts it in and out of 4x4. It was clean and in good shape.

I can hear the 4x4 actuator engage and disengage with the truck sitting in the shop. It always works, and always sounds the same, no inconsistency there.

All wheels spin freely with no binding/noise. Front diff also spins freely with no binding or noise.

Thats about it. Sorry for the long post but I need to figure this out.

I wouldnt even know how to begin to check. The shop just had the drivers side apart to replace a wheel bearing. Could be the passenger side though.

just take the wheel off, then the spindle nut, upper a arm bolt, lower bj, tierod, and the spindle comes off of the axle and you go from there.

Its hard to tell but I wanna say it sounds like its coming from under me, like the Tcase. I can feel it in the seats, i mean it jolts the cab of the truck.

then it might not be the axle. maybe you ate up some gears in the transfer case?

Okay I'm on the beach and...it's definitely the transfer case. I have no idea why I didn't notice it before but after the clunk it is in fact putting it into 2wd. Found this out after it repeatedly went clunk and then my rear end would sink. So...I'm thinking either chain, gear the chain is on, or the 4wd motor/actuator thing
