So the other day I needed to engage the 4x4 ESOF on the 2000 SD and the light for 4x4 came on the dash but it was only the right rear turning. The front hubs are in the "AUTO" position.

I shifted to neutral, turned the 4x4 switch back off then on again, then into drive, turned the ESOF switch off and back on while in drive still nothing on the front axle working.

Shifted to park, turned 4x4 switch off then on again, back to drive this time the right front felt like it was surging in and out of 4x4.

Again cycling the 4x4 dash switch while in drive and finally I was able to get out of the mud in the front yard.

Today it is acting up again. Maybe the hubs have "iced up" and will clear out on warmer weather. The last time I had trouble with the 4x4 was back in 2002, it turned out to be the vacuum pump and I replaced that. Currently the defroster and vent controls cycle quickly between the different options given on the environmental control knob indicating the vacuum pump is working.

Now I feel it is something more than just the vacuum pump, that it may be the vacuum seals in the hubs. Anyone have experience with the 99-up Super Duty ESOF 4x4 as in the tools required to take these hubs apart and check/replace the seals. Last time I tried the ESOF 4x4 was back in September/October and everything worked fine then pulling the landscaping trailer thru the rain soaked backyard.

I found these tools and wanted some input from any one's experience with what all different tools and parts I would need to repair/replace/keep on hand for this system. Spindle inner or outer nut driver? Other handy tools for this type of inspection/repair.

Havent taken them apart, but my dads rig is having the same problem, his is an 02. the common problem is the seals in the hubs, lock the hubs in manually, then switch into 4 high with the ESOF, if it engages fine that pretty much isolates the vac seals, or some other type of vacuum leak. Im a newb when it comes to the hubs and axles on these, but this is just from what ive read and heard.

It would just suck to do all that work to pull the hubs if its a transfer case relay/motor/whatever other mechanical issue it could be.

I keep finding more info as I research, I want to learn how to service this myself.
The know how and tools/parts needed are the first obstacle, I ain't skeerd.

I saw some PDF service doc and instructions from QUAD out of Montana for $3.99 download. Got the Haynes manual to go thru.

The specialty tools are the unknown.

I definately don't want to take it to the dealership and as a last resort there is a Spicer 4x4 service center in Rock Springs, GA. Either of these options will cost major cheddar.
