I'm a delivery driver and one of my cars for wrecked by the wife and the others timing chain broke within a couple weeks of each other so I had to buy a new ride quickly so I could get back to work.

I ended up in a99 Mercury Mountaineer that's in pretty good shape except for some rust and needing new ball joints soon.

I don't know a whole lot about cars but out of financial necessity we try to do whatever work we can on our own. I've got an obd2 adapter for my phone and found out that though the check engine light was not on, I was getting a p0455 code. I thought I'd discovered the cause when I figured out that the vent pipe on the fuel filler neck was rusted all the way through, but I replaced it and the code comes back. Additionally, I'm getting 12-13 MPG at work and needless to say, that's killing my profits.

The next thing I know I can do is have a smoke test done to find the leak in the evap system. But I was hoping there might be something cheaper that might be wrong that's killing my fuel efficiency.
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance

    Joe

I get a P0455 code off and on. It's the line running back to the filter under the spare. It's not causing the fuel consumption with your Mountaineer I'm sure. When's the last time it had a tune up???
