hey guys, here's a write up on how to change and install a new fuel filter on a 97-03 f150.

    Tools needed:
-Safety glasses (don't want gas in your eyes)
    -Small bucket
    -towels
-Fuel line quick disconnect tool ( about $5)
    -New fuel filter ($13)

First thing that needs to be done before even touching the old fuel filter is the fuel pump needs to be turned off or the fuse needs to be pulled. After the fuel pump is disengaged start the engine so all the fuel left in the fuel lines can be burned up. this will help with minimizing the amount of fuel coming out of the line when the old filter is taken off. Next thing is any pressure left in the lines should be released by depressing the shrader valve on the passenger side fuel rail. (located under the hood at the back of the fuel rail. there should be a small black cap that twists off, same kind of valve thats on your tire)

Locate the fuel filter, its on the drivers side on the inside of the frame

Now that that's done you can start uninstalling the old filter.
    you'll need one of these

Pop the filter out of its little holster before this next step, it makes it a lot easier and gives you more room to move.

and you'll need to take the small metal clips off of the fuel filter and fuel lines.
to pop these off you push on the part that goes around the fuel line, once popped up, push forward so the 2 small teeth on the front of clip come out of the area where the fuel filter goes into the fuel line.

put the tool on the filter with the long part facing towards the fuel line. There are 2 sides to the tool i bought, only one side will work for our line.

work the tool back and forth until it slides into the line a little ways and you hear a click or until the line comes loose and slides off of the fuel filter. THE FILTER WILL HAVE GASOLINE INSIDE. This is where the bucket comes in if you have one. just drop the filter in the bucket or just hold it level like i did so nothing drips out and dump it out somewhere. dumped mine into a small bowl to see how dirty the old filter was, the gas came out black and had a lot of sediment in it. (sorry for not having a pic of it).

Now just take the new filter and install it in the reverse order and don't forget to put the clips back on with the teeth going into the fuel line/fuel filter connector. ***MAKE SURE THE ARROW ON THE FUEL FILTER POINTS IN THE DIRECTION THE FUEL FLOWS.

Enjoy your increase in gas mileage and overall better fuel intake to the engine. This can fix a possible rough idle and/or hesitation when accelerating problem.

Very easy install, only took about 10 minutes.

Don't forget to use the good stuff!

Nice write up, but I've never released the pressure from the fuel line since I started replacing my fuel filters back in 2004. I replace them every other oil change, so I could almost do it blindfolded. :jester:

The only fuel that gets comes out is the fuel that's already in the filter. It's a pretty quick and clean job for the most part. I'll try this method next time and see how it goes. :birgits_tiredcoffee
