ok so here is the write up about the gear shifter. i have a picture of one area to adjust the indicator on the column but the one with the bolts i could not get a good picture of.

first one: the little wheel turns to adjust the indicator line on the steering colum back and forth to line it up to where you need it to sit if your indicator is off.

the bolts themselves are above this area and above the steering components under the dash. it takes a (t-30) torex wrench to fix the problem. there are two goldish colored bolts that are above the steering components that need to be tightened up. if your gear shifter is loose at all then i would recommend doing this asap. if one of the bolts falls out like mine did then you will have to set the truck in neutral to get the bolt or bolts to go back into their slot. the bolts will not go in if the truck is set to reverse or drive, fyi! anyway, tighten them up and you should be good to go.

you don't have to dood, everything is back far enough no plastic needs to be removed, you can reach everything from the access area above the pedals

apparently after lots of research this is a very common problem on the 97-03 trucks so i would recommend everyone crawling under there and making sure everything is tight.
