Part of the poor mileage is the long bed.

Second is a combo of 31" tires and the 302.. The 302 is a weakling off the line even with stock tires even more so with 31's.

Yeah, I heard of people advancing the timing to 13 or 14 degrees advanced for some more power, have you done that?

Well I have my mind set to drop a 460 in when my 302 goes out- 160k hopes it lasts long! But how much hp and torque would I gain from the added timing

    Like not really any.. 5..

A 460 swap ain't with the added trouble.. Like...

    Wiring harness
    Ecu swap
    Fuel pump swap
    engine perches
    Transmission swap
    Transmission crossmember swap

And I'm sure more stuff I'm not thinking of..

A 351w swap will get you as much horsepower and nearly as much tq. And be a much easier swap.. Ecu.. And that's it..

If the trucks past has been maintained and not beat on it'll last well into the 200k's

I swapped mine out at 164k miles cause the previous owners never maintained it

460 would be carbed with a c6 trans ad it wouldn't be hard to build up to 500+ hp, I've priced it all put.
The 302 has had oil changes every 3000 miles but it has been used since day 1 hauling bed full loads of dirt or wood etc.
