If all you are doing is bigger tires and gears, spend the money on an edge or sct plug in programmer. They will be in the $200-$600 range depending on what kind and model you get. I have a SCT livewire that shows me live data. Other models will tune the computer and then you can unplug it. These programmers have tunes already on them (87, 91, 93) and will allow you to do the same thing over and over again that you are going to pay for Ford to do once. You plug in the gear ratio and tire size and it adjusts the speedo accordingly. Do some research on them but I'd say that's your best bet for what you need. Engine mods (intake, exhaust, cams, etc) are going to require a custom tune more than tires and gears.
I would LOVE to have an SCT livewire but simply can't afford $600 for that right now. Hopefully I can get one soon. I think I'm gonna start off with the 4.56 gears, then see what Ford can do (I work there so it won't cost me a dime), then in a few months hopefully pick up an SCT. I was going to ask about programmers because I wasn't sure of the differences between a custom tune and a handheld tuner.
Do gears before tune absolutey!! A tune on these motors doesn't do much, gears will take a ton of stress off the tranny and motor. A tune just adds a little power an seriously not as much as you'd think, but it does increase throttle response an you can adjust a lot of things with tuners but definitely do gears, idk who said you could just tune for tires an drive cause it won't do hardly anything. It's all in the math man an gears are the way to go then a tuner on top of that if you want . But a tuner in no way will make even a ballpark change to driving that gears will
Yeah more like build up my damn 4v and swap it in already. That'll solve my service engine soon light lol And I don't have any complaints with my livewire. Works just like it should.
