I've had something similar happen but on a different note. When i was installing some offroad lights i had to change a fuse cause i was running the lights through the fuse box long story but i ended up taking all the fuses out and kinda forgot how which way they went back in. So i put them in went to crank up the truck and nothing. Lights went out truck just died. Worst feeling in the world. Said a prayer tried again and boom. All back to normal. Turned out it was the battery where i had disconnected it and i didnt tighten it back enough so the possitive connector came off. lol

Maybe some kind of heat resistant insulator over the wiring like a split piece of fuel line then wrapped in aluminum tape?

something similar happened to me before on my old jeep. the harness for my fuel pump grounded out on the axle and blew the fuse. towed it home then found the blown fuse. thought i was going to have to replace my fuel pump.
