So i changed out my rear dif fluid about a year ago.Put in Royal Purple and re-sealed with high temp black gasket sealer. All but one spot has the gasket protruding from the dif.Only spot that doesn't have gasket protruding from is the lower bottom from the 3 screw that tighten it.Noticed a leak 2 days ago.

Now my question is.If that part is not sealed right, can that cause a leak from that spot?Again the rest of the dif has sealant protruding out and no leaks at all.Just that one spot where it's not protruding from?Any help would be great guys. Thanks

sounds like you didnt put enough around the bolt holes on the bottom and that is your cause now. not sure if you did it this way, but i always make a loop around every bolt hole, then connect all the loops w/ a bead to ensure i have not missed a spot. can't ever go wrong w/ using too much gasket sealer. i'm doin my rear diff this weekend, so i'll get a pic then.

you only due damage when the fluid level becomes to low. there is a point at which the gear will not flip the oil up and around the housing, which is how the gear stays lubricated. think of it as those old fashioned water wheels instead of water going over and down, its reversed and tosses oil up and over.[IMG]

    you have 2 options:

    A) Add fluid until you get around to taking off the diff and resealing

    B) Reseal (gonna add fluid in option A, might as well just drop $25 and redo the oil/seal)

One thing I like to do is only run the bolts down finger tight once you goop up the cover. Let it sit about an hour or two, then tighten the rest of the way. Sometimes if you torque it down right away you can squeeze too much sealer out and cause a leak as well.

Thanks guys.Ya i might as well do it all again.Just a dam cause the Royal Purple fluid was $19.98 bottle and it took 3 bottles to fill mine up.

OK now my other question is since i will be changing it out again.Should i just forgo the Royal Purple and use something else that already has the friction modifier added to it?If so,whats a good brand to go with?

thats a great tip, something i do as well but forgot to mention

i'm using the Mobil one for Diff w/ LS already added. No problems w/ it since i changed last time, and my LS makes no noise so I know it works like its supposed.

i ran everything RP as well, eng oil, trans, and diff. but after swapping to mobile One (after rolling 100K) i found i had no performance loss from switching, and since Mobile one is less expensive, thats a win for me.
