my 96 has an inoperable Ac compressor. previous owner pulled the compressor and set it aside with the AC lines still hooked up, installed a bypass pulley so the truck would run. my question is, do i replace the entire AC compressor, theyre around $180 plus i have to pay to have the system emptied before i pull the hoses off. OR so i swap just the AC clutch? right now, as the compressor sits, the pulley does not move at all. is something jacked up internally or would a bad clutch cause this to happen? clutch is only $80.
Take the clutch off and see if the shaft turns to the compressor internals, may take a breaker bar or long handle ratchet wrench to get it to turn. Should have a vacuum pulled on the system before installing freon. A new desiccant chamber would be a prudent suggestion. But if it say slowly leaked out I won't tell any one if you don't. Harbor F has 2.5 CFM vaccum pump for $89.99 and the AC manifold gauges set is $49.99 now you need two 20% off coupons. They have the online coupons too. Parking lot sale is June 10, 11, 12 . So check my math 90+50=140-20%=112 plus Michigan sales tax. Now check what it would cost to have someone pull vacuum and do the labor of add freon and install desiccant chamber you can do after you buy tools, think of it as long term, you can do AC repairs also as no permit needed for R134 ...YET UV light and yellow glasses for leak detection - Walmart
Good thinking, Joe! I'll check the shaft tomorrow, if I don't have to replace the compressor, that would be a good thing lol.
Saw a cheaper vacuum and gauge setup on Amazon Thing about leak detection is dye is to be added to a working system then use UV light and yellow glasses. @Pity7700 Galaxy S4 Cetane Powered Android
Subscribed! My mustang has an inoperable AC compressor as well. I may follow your lead if this works out better than replacing it and flushing the system. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Should be able to tinker with it today. My damn drain backed up in the basement yesterday...was a pretty shitty mess. Haha
