I've got a shallow Sony Xplod running off a Soundstream amp. I know, the sub is junk and hopefully I now have an excuse to replace it with something that actually does it's job. It has recently been shutting on and off. I can be driving down the road, suddenly it is off, and it may come back on a few minutes later, or it might wait until the next time I drive somewhere. I have checked all fuses and wiring, and the amps lights all stay on when the sub isn't working. The truck was already wired when I got it, and I havn't had a stereo wiring issue with it ever.

Bottom line, I just wanted to check with you all if you think it would be the sub as well, or if there is the chance there is some other problem I should look at.

I did take the sub out of the box and checked the leads as well. Even removed them and put them back on.

okay you should have it wired in bridged mode. im guessing that you do. My guess is that the amp may be going in to protection mode or the sub is going out. if the amp is not getting hot, you might as well start savin for a new sub.

Yes single voice coil, and yes wired in bridged mode, and the amp has been warm a few times but I have never let it get too hot, when it starts getting a bit warm for my comfort I will shut it down. It has never been even warm in the instance that the sub shuts off. Guess it's time to get a new sub then. Thank you all for the quick and helpful replies. The Kicker sub i posted below is what I plan to get unless I hear something bad about it.

    KICKER® 07CVR12-D4 12" CompVR-Series SUBWOOFER (Dual 4-Ohm).

Assuming I would just wire it up the same way as the sub I currently have.
