when my truck is idling, on the inside i've noticed a slight ticking.it's not too loud like it would be something internal but it is noticeable. i was wondering what the infamous cam phaser going out sounds like or any other common problems with the 04 that i might have(already had window motor go out :Grenade:) i'm not throwing any codes and ive scanned with the edge and still nothing. if the cam phaser goes out will it throw a code?

More than likely it's a cam phaser. It could be a noisy fuel injecting also. Mine are loud on my truck.

5.4, with a slight ticking is fuel injectors or a exhaust leak. If you had the famous cam phaser noise it would be soundling like a diesel.

"If you have a VCT knock this will generally be present when the oil has reached operating temps of over 160 degrees" the oil is usually over 160 after a good warm up and driving around a little then say i stop a a stop light i'll hear it.

Does the tick go away ABOVE 1,000-1,200 RPM's? If it ticks all the way threw ALL RPM's it's cam phasers. If it goes away after 1200 RPM's it's the VCT sensors.
